Property Maintenance & Code Enforcement
The Village of Barnesville has established a Property Maintenance Code to help protect the public health, safety, and welfare of our community and to help maintain property values throughout the Village.
Chapter 1381 of the Codified Ordinances of the Village of Barnesville, known as the Property Maintenance Code, establishes minimum standards for the maintenance, appearance, condition, and occupancy of properties within the Village. The Code also establishes procedures for inspection and enforcement when violations are identified.
Property owners and other responsible parties are expected to maintain their properties in accordance with the requirements of the Code. The Code addresses a variety of conditions, including property deterioration, excessive vegetation, accumulations of refuse, inoperable vehicles, unsafe structures, infestations, nuisances, and other conditions that may affect the health, safety, or welfare of the community.

What Types of Concerns Can Be Reported?
- Roof or gutters in disrepair
- Broken or missing windows
- Porches or porch roofs in disrepair
- Deteriorated exterior surfaces
- Deteriorated or unsafe structures
- Garages, storage buildings, or carports in deplorable condition
- Abandoned or unsecured buildings
- Overgrown grass or weeds
- Accumulation of trash, refuse, or debris
- Tires, furniture, appliances, or similar materials
- Inoperable or obsolete vehicles
- Deteriorating fences or retaining walls
- Conditions that may contribute to the harborage or breeding of vermin
- Insect or rodent infestation
- Dangerous or hazardous conditions
- Conditions that may constitute a nuisance
- Conditions affecting drainage or runoff
- Other conditions potentially covered by the Property Maintenance Code
How to Report a Violation or Concern?
Reporting a property maintenance concern is a simple process. Provide the Village with the property location, describe the concern, and include any information that may help us review the matter.
- Identify the Property: Provide the property address or location where the concern exists
- Describe the Concern: Tell us what you observed and, when possible, select the type of property maintenance concern you are reporting.
- Provide Supporting Information: Include photographs or other information that may help the Village understand and review the concern.
- Village Review: Your submission will be forwarded to the Village’s designated Code Enforcement contact for review. The appropriate Enforcement Officer will determine whether further investigation or enforcement action is warranted.
Submitting a property maintenance concern does not establish that a violation of Village Ordinances exist: All concerns are reviewed by the Village. Depending on the nature of the concern, an inspection, additional information, or further investigation may be necessary before the Village determines whether a violation exists or whether enforcement action is appropriate. The Property Maintenance Code provides procedures for addressing violations and allows the Village to consider factors such as the circumstances of the violation, efforts to correct the condition, whether an imminent health or safety hazard exists, and whether similar violations have previously occurred.
